A Pigeon Pair: Sweetheart, Let's Get Married novel Chapter 31

Maverick arrived at the company.

Five minutes ago, he got a phone call. He held the phone with one hand and put the other one in his trousers pocket. He listened to someone talk on the phone for a long time in a nonchalant manner.

And his replies were short and perfunctory.

When the elevator door opened, he was surprised by what he saw.

The woman in there was a total wreck.

Despair flared up to her eyes when she saw him.

She was both abashed and helpless.

She bit her lips and looked away to avoid his gaze.

Maverick felt something was unleashed within him when he gazed upon her shy eyes.

He acknowledged and said something in Italian over the phone. Everly did not understand it. Then, he walked into the elevator.

She froze for a moment and then said, "Mr. Maverick, can I take half a day off today? I've torn my skirt."

Maverick just darted her a glance without saying anything.

For some reason, he felt ten pounds lighter.

Everly watched as he pressed the button to close the elevator and couldn't utter a sound.

What do you mean?

She was a complete mess. Couldn't he just leave her alone to her rueful heart?

What kind of boss was he?

"Turn off the elevator surveillance," he said.

Everly drooped her head and pulled the split hem holding a coffee cup. Then, she saw the scarlet light in the elevator go out seconds after he finished speaking.

She pursed her lips in shame and embarrassment.

In fact, she knew Maverick did that as a favor.

The elevator was packed, but no one had been willing to help her. What was she thinking? Why would they help her when they didn't even know her?

But she would help someone in distress.

And now?

She was surprised that annoying Maverick had actually lent her a hand.

Nonetheless, what she really wanted was to take half a day off and go home to change.

How could she go to work like this?

While she was complaining about him mentally, Maverick stepped forward and looked at her with a faint smile. "Secretary Everly, haven't you noticed there is a weird vibe going on between us?"

His eyes lingered on her exposed long legs for some time before they left.

His tone was flirtatious, and his gaze was tinged with contempt.

It popped into Everly's mind that....

When they first met in a hotel, he had just taken a bath.

Then, when they were alone in the bathroom of the dining room, her bra straps slid off.

Now....

She knew what he meant. He might be thinking she was exposing herself to seduce him.

She felt wronged. "I'm the victim. The elevator doors clenched my skirt and wouldn't let go. It was so crowded, and I got pushed around. That was how it was torn. Do you think I want my skirt to be like this?"

Maverick narrowed his eyes.

It had been crowded?

Didn't she know the way she was covering her legs turned him on?

And to imagine how she had been pushed around in a crowd like this!

Maverick fell silent. Everly didn't realize she was not shy to speak her mind to him.

Perhaps Maverick was also yet to notice she was not intimidated by him. Actually, she had been acting like he was fond of her.

But was he?

They were both unaware of what was really going on.

Everly felt a little uncomfortable being stared at by him. Moreover, the elevator was cramped, and he had a strong vibe. It felt like the air had been getting thinner.

She cleared her throat and looked away, pleading, "Well..., can I be a little late for work? I have to go home and change my clothes."

If half a day wouldn't do, she could be quick.

"How far is your home from Lamont Group?"

"Well, it would take 40 minutes to go there and come back. If there's a traffic jam, it will take longer."

"Then what makes you think as my secretary you can ask for leave in the morning? Can't you think of a way to solve this?"

Everly's face turned cold. "Mr. Maverick, I wasn't anybody's secretary. It is my first time doing this."

"I pay you to do your job. I believe your salary is more than good. You don't get to pick what you do. This is not your brother's company."

Everly's face turned red when she sensed the contempt in his tone.

He was unbelievable!

"Mr. Maverick, don't you see I can't go to work with my legs exposed like this? Can you please listen to reason?"

"What did you say?" He found her words somewhat funny. Did she mean he was unreasonable?

He froze and then approached her. Everly retreated, but her back soon touched the elevator wall.

She panicked and discovered she was breathing his hormone in.

She was distracted.

She flustered and moved her hands from her legs. Maverick could see her thighs now.

Those babies used to be wrapped around his waist.

Maverick swallowed. He always thought he was a man of reason.

And sex was just sex.

But now, he couldn't get that passionate night with this fox off his mind when she was right in front of him.

What was worse, the flashbacks he thought he had forgotten were flooding back.

How she had moaned to his rhythm.

However, she was staring at him with her big doe eyes, as if she didn't remember that night.

Not only that, but she might still be seeing Lucas.

And perhaps the man in her phone.

She was no Virgin Mary. But why was she acting like she didn't have any interest in Maverick?

He almost believed she was a good girl.

He thought she only had a fling with him, because her clear eyes told him she was not an easy girl.

It turned out he was wrong.

The idea that he was her only man ignited a blazing fire within him, but he didn't understand it yet.

It was like a puzzle. A childish one, though.

But he couldn't control it.

Once he had eyes on something, he was determined to get it. He was possessive. Therefore, apart from his daughter, he had no one. He had lost interest in other women when he met Everly.

But now, it felt a little different.
