CEO Proposed to His Ex-wife 99 Times novel Chapter 303

Katherine immediately asked Kyle to come to her place.

Marshall was sitting with his legs crossed. When he hung up, he commented, “Rosalie is getting more and more efficient with this kind of thing.”

Because the last time she had to fish Kyle out of a police station, she wasn’t nearly as quick as today.

Katherine scowled. “You have to investigate carefully into this and find out if it was really the Bennett do.”

Marshall hummed in agreement. “Rest assured that I won’t let them off the hook easily since they got you involved this time.”

Katherine stared at Marshall with her lips pursed. She really couldn’t figure him out. Why would he always sound like he was insinuating when he spoke? That was such a weird, tricky feeling, and she had felt it since last night. She’d sensed something wrong with Marshall when he came to visit yesterday, but had thought that she was overthinking it. But no. Now she could be sure that she hadn’t misinterpreted anything, since Marshall was clearly still not behaving like his usual self right now.

The smile on Marshall’s face only grew bigger after he looked away.

Hector’s expressions, on the other hand, only cooled down. He could tell that Marshall had intended to sting him when the latter man made that little speech; of course, Marshall was speaking at least some of his own mind, too.

None of them spoke after that, and Peter got out of the house to make phone calls in the front yard. To look into Marcus Russell, Marshall naturally didn’t have to do it himself; it would suffice to have Peter make arrangements for the investigation.

After Peter finished his calls, he didn’t come inside straight away, but waited in the yard instead until Kyle drove to Katherine’s place himself. Clearly still fuming, Kyle continued to grumble as he got out of the car.

Marshall turned his head to look in Kyle’s direction. Speaking to nobody in particular, he commented, “His gold chain…”

Tsking, Katherine interrupted, “Right?! I find that thing hideous, too!”

Marshall decided to bite down the words he was about to say. Kyle had always had unique tastes, so the signature gold chain was an understandable styling choice.

Kyle entered the living room angrily, grabbed a glass of water, and downed the liquid in its entirety at one go, not caring if it had belonged to somebody else.

“What happened?” asked Katherine as she stood up, “what did those people say at the police station?”

“Bloody pain in the ass,” said Kyle, hands on his hips as he added, “the more sober ones among them blamed everything on Marcus Russell, who was still high as a kite when I left.”

Watching Kyle, Marshall asked, “Have you pissed anyone off recently?”

Kyle made a bitter face. “That’s a difficult question, cuz I don’t even know exactly how many people I’ve managed to piss off.”

Marshall rolled his eyes. “Recently, as in the past few days. You should at least know who you’ve pissed off during the past few days, right?”

Goggling, Kyle looked like he was getting it. “Well, if you phrase it like that, then I can tell you confidently that I pissed off the Henderson chicks.”

“Who?” asked Marshall, confused.

“Who else but Clara Henderson and her mom?” replied Kyle as he sat down on the sofa, “Just today I clashed with them. Fresh from the oven, you know.”

Katherine was reminded of the incident, too. However, she began to frown. “It couldn’t have been them, could it? As unseemly as the Hendersons are, they couldn’t have done something so despicable, right?”

Not to mention that it would be almost impossible for them to retaliate in the afternoon, when they had only been offended in the morning. The Hendersons wouldn’t reasonably have been able to arrange for all of this.

Kyle thought about it and only grew more confident in his suspicion. “You know what, it’s probably them. Couple of devious witches they are, trying to get back at me after I gave them a good talking-to today.”

“So you clashed with the Hendersons today?” asked Marshall as he looked at Kyle.

“Yup,” said Kyle matter-of-factly, “ask Kathy if you don’t believe me. She was there, too.”

“That did happen,” Katherine supplemented as she nodded, “well, I was mostly to blame. I’d set my eyes on a night gown, but Clara wanted it too, so her mother said something to taunt me. Kyle was mad at them for being mean, so he tore the night gown into shreds. It wasn’t pretty.”

Thus, Marshall understood what had happened. Kyle had promised to bring Katherine to the old Mrs. Walters’ birthday celebration; needless to say, Katherine would need a proper gown.

Kyle smacked his hand loudly on his thigh. “It must be them who are plotting against me. Those Henderson she-devils, they haven’t seen the last of me yet!”

Raising a hand, Hector tried to calm him down. “Stop. This is all in your head. Relax and take it slow, will you?”

But Kyle was still angry and hurt from having been wronged. He’d never felt this way before, as his previous trips to a police station had been well-earned, he himself having been at fault in the first place. But he was set up this time, plain and simple. Holy smoke, what atrocities! How was someone as ill-tempered as he supposed to stomach this fact?

Katherine walked towards him and patted gently and carefully on his back. “There, there. You have to take it slow when plotting your revenge, since without hard evidence of their wrongdoings, you can’t really do anything. Why don’t you wait until Marshall concludes his investigation?”

Katherine had never been so gentle with Kyle before, which flattered him. He then gradually calmed down as a result.

After some pause, Kyle said, “That beastly woman truly doesn’t compare to you in any way. I doubt she will ever get married if she continues like that.”

Katherine blinked, not understanding who he was referring to.

“Rosie Mitchel,” explained Kyle, “just you wait till I get her ass.”

“Do you mean Detective Mitchell?” asked Hector.

“That’s who. I think she’s onto me, always snooping around my club and all.”

Kyle had wanted to get back at that woman for a while, but he hadn’t been able to come up with a way to do it, mostly because he had no legitimate reasons for retaliation. After all, Detective Mitchell was a police officer, and every time they had an encounter, Kyle had no other choice than to accept his fate of being punished by her for his misdemeanors.

Katherine recalled the female officer she saw earlier, who seemed like a likeable woman with integrity.

“She’s alright,” commented Katherine, “I think she was nice enough. And I felt safe around her.”

Kyle tsked. “It doesn’t befit a woman to make others feel safe around her. Do you understand that, madam?”

Katherine chuckled as she continued patting Kyle on the back. “Yes, yes, I do.”

Meanwhile, Marshall had his eyes fixed on Katherine’s hand movements the entire time. Katherine had one hand on Kyle’s arm and the other on his back, and she was sitting mightily close to him, too.

That wasn’t a pretty scene from Marshall’s perspective, so he sat up and asked, “Did Rosalie say anything earlier today, Kyle?”

At the mention of Rosalie Haverford, Kyle shuddered uncontrollably and sat up straight. Katherine followed his lead and sat up, too, thus creating more of a distance between the two of them.

Grimacing, Kyle replied, “Rosalie asked me not to show up before her, since she wouldn’t be able to resist her murderous urges.”

That made Marshall smile slightly.

Kyle moaned and whined. “Marshall, man, you gotta help me find out if the Henderson chicks did it. If it was really them, just let me know and I’ll come over and get them good.”

Marshall looked immensely calm. “Don’t worry. I will. And even if you decide to let it go, I won’t, since Katherine almost got implicated in what transpired today.”

Failing to notice his suggestive tone, Kyle nodded profusely. “I knew it! I always know that I can count on you. See, you are the person we all feel the safest around.”

Marshall, turning his gaze on Katherine, asked with a gentle voice, “Is that true?”
