House Of Legions (The Angel Descendants book 1) novel Chapter 85

She felt like she was losing her mind, “Calub, they are lying.”

Her voice rose, she made an effort to convince him, but his eyes told her there was no hope. She faced Sofia, pointing her finger at her, tears brimming in Clare’s eyes, “I’m going to find out the truth, all of it.”

This was too much. Just when she thought her life couldn’t get any worse. Just when she thought she had seen the light. When she felt a breath easier than it had been, she felt worse. It was burning her out, she felt clustered like she couldn’t breathe. She needed air, space, distance, she needed release.

Clare pushed Sofia away.

“STAY AWAY FROM ME.” She spat, “YOU ARE A LIAR, YOU ARE ALL LIARS.”

Sofia fell on the table, and remained there, shocked as Clare quickened to the door.

Clare ran out of the room, crying. She went straight for the front door, opened it, and ran for the gate. It was miles away, but she didn’t stop. She quickened her pace when somebody was standing there out of nowhere. A guy with black jeans and a white loose shirt which was buttoned almost to the top, and rolled up sleeves with black bands on his wrist, dark glasses, that gave off a darkened inside to his style. She slowed down, wiping her tears, sniffing in her snot.

“I thought I’ll stick around, I gathered, you might need my services after all Love.”

She was glad to see him, he gave her a devilish smile, as she drew herself closer to him.

“Teary eyes and bare feet, you don't intend on staying do you?” His face gave her what she searched for, and right now she needed someone who would make her forget that her world was in turmoil. That everything she had known was all a lie and that she was now a stranger to herself.

“Well you figured right, how do I get outta here?”

He didn’t have to say a thing to Clare, she could see it in his smile, feel it in his words, that he was there for her, no matter the consequence. He took out his hand from his pocket and looked feverishly at her.

Clare could feel his heated gaze staring, his black shades hiding his eyes but not the intensity. She took his hand, without a second thought, “Are we going to teleport or something.” She sniffed, “how do you do that anyway?”

“Not with difficulty.”

He gazed at her as if searching for the right words to say, “I should warn you, Love, your man will not be pleased if he finds you with me.”

“Last I checked I didn’t have one.”

Nikolai didn’t respond, he held her hand tighter and walked towards the gate. He touched it, and the gate swung open. They carried on walking. Clare was surprised and nervous at the same time, she had never walked alone with a guy besides Phillip. She thought a bit about him, but anger just filled her heart, thinking about him, the lies he told all those years.

They walked down a pathway, through some trees, like a mini forest. The trees weren’t tall but big trunks and full of green leaves, the place smelt like a graveyard. They carried on down and stopped when they reached the beginning of a road. Nikolai took the lead and approached a black sports car. She tried to keep her mind out of thoughts.

He let her hand go which felt sweaty, so did her body. He had a really hot body temperature, and the heat in Los Angeles wasn’t helping either. Years in a cold city didn’t help to adjust to weather like this. The car clicked open.

“Aston Martin Vanquish,” Nikolai spoke of his car as though he could never be more proud.

“Nice ride,” she said, “I guess the Warlock business pays well.”

He smiled, and paused but didn’t answer.

Clare walked to open the passenger door, but he was already there, “Thanks.”

Nikolai took out his glasses when he got into the driver’s seat, touching his rearview mirror, “Your hair, it’ll take getting used to Love.”

“Is that your idea of a compliment?”

“If I were to compliment you, you would know it.”

She shook her head, “Guys, just cease to amaze me.”

“Are you referring to me or your love puppies?”
