Mr George, Don't Be So Arrogant novel Chapter 58

After getting off the plane, Riley and the patients from several other departments of the hospital got on a bus while carrying medical supplies. The bus drove though bumpy roads for a couple of hours, and it was already nine o'clock at night when they reached the town.

When they got off the bus, Riley and the fellow doctors were dumbfounded.

“What kind of place is this?”

“It looks like the place Mao Zedong had been through when he fought in the guerilla warfare!”

The dirt road underneath their feet were rugged and uneven, the junction outside of the town only had two dim street lamps. The saffron-colored lights were only able to light up a small, round area on the ground. Those poor lights had not been taken care of for a long time.

“Damn, how can anyone live here? Is this place not yet liberated?"

“Did I travel through time? Will we see a ghost in the village later?”

“There are no ghosts here, but if we failed to complete our mission, we might be the ones who will become the ghosts.”

“Ah! Are you bored of living! You scared me to death!”

Between the seven to eight doctors, there were only three women, the other two majored in respiratory and gastroenterology, they were all newcomers with shallow qualifications. It was obvious that they were sent here to be sidelined.

The group of people were shivering in fear as they walked to the accommodation prepared by the hospital in advance. There was only a two-story building in this town, an incandescent lamp was hanging by the door of the building, the power of the light bulb was only about fifteen watts. The wind also kept blowing, and it looked like the lamp will fall at any moment.

When they arrived at the door of the building, the village chief quickly came out to welcome them while inviting them warmly to come in and rest. The middle-aged man wore an old Chinese tunic suit, and a hole burned by a cigarette could be seen on his sleeve through the light of the lamp.

The poverty here was quite evident.

“I've been preparing to welcome you all for a long time, and you all are finally here! Come on in, dinner is ready.”

Although the village chief was very passionate, several people still kept a respectful distance between them. The people in this village, who dared to have contact with them!

The eight people entered the door, and indeed, six large yellow big bowls filled with different dishes was placed on the living room’s table. Seeing those dishes and indoor furnishings, the female doctors just moved their sight to the other side, they did not want to open their mouths as they were scared that they will vomit. They also could not stand to look at it a second time.

Riley’s reaction was not that dramatic, but as she just had a bumpy ride, her stomach and intestines were not feeling that well, and it caused her to have no appetite.

Several doctors said in unison, “We have already eaten.”

The village chief was a little embarrassed, “This... dishes have been prepared.”

Considering their concerns, the village chief waved his hand and gave a straightforward explanation, “You all don’t have to worry, these ingredients were specially bought from outside of the village for you, the village people never even seen it before. The dishes were made by me alone, and I... I don’t have any illness.”

The fellow villager explained again, but still no one dared to eat the dishes. They rather starved than to risk their lives.

After Riley bit her lips and smiled at the village chief, she also followed the others to the second floor. When she was at the corners of the stairs, Riley looked down and saw the village chief sigh while looking at the dishes.

Her heart had some mixed feelings.

The so-called lounge, was just a room with two wooden beds lied inside and the bedding was new. The two doctors started whimpering and crying once they entered the lounge, “I want to go home, what kind of lousy place is this.”

“I'm afraid, I'm afraid of getting sick. If we got sick here, we can't be cured, boohoo!”

Riley tugged the quilt, “You guys are doctors, don’t you have any common sense? What are you afraid of? Let’s just sleep first as we will be busy tomorrow.”

The two doctors looked at Riley as if she was a monster, “You ... are actually not afraid?”

“What’s the use of being afraid? It is better to save some energy and rest. Try to get everything done by tomorrow and go back early.”

That night, as Riley was lying in bed, she looked at the moonlight out the window of this three-dimensional world. She cursed in her heart, “Damn it, this life is really worthwhile.”

At this time, JD City.

The bustling streets were decorated with neon lights which were bright like a sea of stars, everyone here were indulging in a life of luxury.

William came out of the operating room at 9:30 p.m., as he rubbed his sore shoulders, he also looked at the lights outside the window.

“Mr. Hardesty, did the surgery go well?”

Jeanne had already changed into her casual clothes. She wore a skirt which only covered to her knees. She also wore a simple yet pretty bolero jacket. With some light makeup and long hair, she looked gentle and noble.

“It went well.”

“Since Mr. Hardesty has been in the operating room for so long, you should be hungry, right? I've just finished working too, why don't we eat together.”

William took off his gloves and threw them into the trash can, “Some other time, it’s already quite late.”

Jeanne smiled warmly, her red lips were tinged with softness, “Mr. Hardesty, we can have the meal on another day, but how can we change the date of one’s birthday?”

William knitted his handsome eyebrows, “Today’s your birthday?”

“Dear Mr. Hardesty, your intelligence and energy has been occupied by the patients. Today, is your birthday. So, birthday boy, I'm treating you to dinner, and you can’t refuse it.”

“Oh? It's just a birthday, it doesn't really matter.”

“Your birthday only comes once a year, how can it not matter, let's go! Just use today to pamper yourself.”

Jeanne graciously held William’s arm and walked forward, the latter did not move and pulled out his hand by acting as if he was finding his phone.

The two of them were sitting at the window of an elegant western restaurant. Jeanne kept trying to get William’s attention. She tried changing several topics, but he was still not interested.

“By the way, does Mr. Hardesty know that the place that our hospital has volunteered to give assistance this time to was at a village which was infested by AIDS, a total of eight doctors went there.”

William had heard of this decision, but he was too busy preparing for the surgery to ask in detail, “This is a good thing, it's great for the hospital to do more good deeds."

As Jeanne’s slender fingers held her knife and fork, she said carelessly, “I also think it's great, the doctors who went there were quite outstanding. Heh, I didn't expect the best doctor from our cardiology department also went with them.”

William’s hand was hanging in the air without any more movement, “Who are you talking about?”

Jeanne’s red lips tilted slightly, “Our hospital's big shot, Riley Watson, Dr. Watson.”

Why did she go?

“I still have something to do, I'll have to leave first. Ms. Pouchain, just take your time and enjoy your dinner.”

“Mr. Hardesty, you...”
