My Most Precious Human novel Chapter 94

Kanan was more than eager to come to the celebration ball with me. He immediately offered that he would introduce me to some of his supporters that would be present at the event. I was already convinced that choosing him as my so-called partner would be beneficial for both of us. He lived like an outcast for most of the thirty years of his life, staying in the shadows of the Palace that was supposed to be his home. He had to avoid all of the stronger semi-nobles and mixed-breed servants because mother nature didn't give him overly-grown muscles so he could fight for respect. Nonetheless, Kanan had been given other unique abilities. He was pretty much a genius. He was like a golden child, multiplying large numbers in seconds and swallowing advanced quantum physics as light reading before sleep. All those vampires who had lost their titles but still had quite a fortune gathered over the centuries adored him since he was giving them bits of financial advice and reviewing their latest projects. They respected him, but they couldn't show it openly, merely because Kanan was unable to fight for himself. I could understand him, and I wanted to become his strength, and he knew that having me by his side would help him attract more supporters, especially because I had the Royal Army on my side…

"You've become famous in just one day. Elora must be furious," he giggled.

"Great. I love to piss off my enemies." I rolled my eyes.

"It's a good thing that she would probably be wrapped around the King all evening tomorrow, so it's highly doubtful she'd make her move to hurt you," he claimed, trying to wave off my worries.

Unfortunately, he just increased the anxiety within me. "Why would she be wrapped around Sariel? I thought she hates him, doesn't she?" I laughed nervously, silently praying that Kanan would confirm my words.

"Hate him?" Kanan burst out laughing, "She was obsessed with him for as long as I remember. Didn't you know? The reason why she wants you dead isn't because you could jeopardize her plans, but because she wants the King for herself."

"Shit," I cursed under my breath, realizing my naivety.

I would rather she aim for power and not for the man I loved, especially since I knew that he was going to sweet-talk her. At that moment, it looked like Sariel's plan could easily backfire in a way I surely wouldn't like.

"Elora most likely killed every girl that got close to Sariel Calvet, you know?" he tossed casually, pouring me another glass of champagne.

"Good to know," I sighed, with a nervous smile.

"Including the human girl he claimed he loved…" he added and paused.

"Laura…?" I asked hesitantly.

"Yes, that was her name." He nodded, confirming.

"That can't be right. I remember that Sariel killed her by accident. He sucked her dry because of the full moon," I stated, hoping to prove him wrong.

"Well, do you really suspect someone as strong and composed of killing someone simply because it was a full moon?" he chuckled. "I cannot prove that, but I guess that Elora sent someone to poison Sariel Calvet that night. The poison wasn't strong enough to kill him, but it was efficient enough to increase his bloodlust to an insane level."

"How can you be so sure it was her?" I asked suspiciously.

"I know my sister isn't clairvoyant, but all of the servants who witnessed those events remember her celebrating this girl's death the night before she died. Makes you think, doesn't it?" he smirked.

Chills ran down my spine. I already knew that Elora was capable of implementing all kinds of schemes, but pulling off something like poisoning Sariel at his own home would have been a truly bold move.

"So… I shouldn't probably drink or eat anything she gives me, right?" I smiled wryly.

"My guess is that you will be safe as long as the King stays by her side." He shrugged.

That wasn't comforting at all. I didn't want Elora to be near Sariel. I couldn't bear the thought that she would be close to him while I should stay away. She would be able to touch him, feel his scent, see him smiling at her, falsely but still… God! I was burning with jealousy just imagining them together. Even though it would be a part of some necessary — as Sariel called it — game, my heart already ached.

"No offense but… I really want to get rid of your sister." I gritted my teeth and finished my glass of champagne.

"None taken," he chuckled, but the smile quickly disappeared from his face. "I wanted to kill her from the moment I learned she killed my mother."

I suddenly felt sympathetic towards him. I didn't even know if my mother was alive or not. From Ezra's words, I learned that she loved me and cared for me. She was devastated when my father decided to send me away. I used to hate her for not trying to meet me all those years, but then I realized that she could either meet me or protect the pack. I guess she wasn't powerful enough to do both. At some point, I stopped hoping to see her ever again. I only hoped that she was able to live her life peacefully despite losing me.

I looked Kanan in the eyes and gave him a sad smile. "Do you know… how did your mother die?" I asked hesitantly.

He sighed, looking down at the tabletop.

"You don't have to answer…" I laughed nervously, waving off that question.

"It's ok," he smiled, "My nanny used to tell me that the scene of her death was like something from some tragic love tale…" He paused as if he was recalling the parts of the story.

"If it's painful, don't tell me. I don't need to know-"

"It is fine. I even like that story in some masochistic way," he let out a full of an irony chuckle, and then took a deep breath. "As I told you before, Elora wanted to kill my mother several times when she was pregnant with me. Fortunately, my mother had a few trusted vampires by her side, and they examined everything he was given to eat and drink. After discovering that most of her meals had been poisoned, she came to my father, telling him who was behind it and asking for justice… Only the servants who brought her food were sentenced to death. The real culprit, Elora, had never received any kind of punishment. After that, my mother distanced herself from my father, and Elora became more cautious. She knew that there were substances that couldn't harm a vampire but were lethal to humans, even when served in small doses. She bribed one of my mother's servants to add a little bit of diethylene glycol each time she had a dessert. The toxin can cause severe stomach aches, headaches, and even hallucinations. The substance itself is sweet, so my mother was unable to detect that something was wrong. She noticed that she had been poisoned when she already had serious health problems. She came to my father, telling him that she wanted to leave him and raise me alone. When my father refused, she stood before him and declared, ‘I am breaking the blood bond between us. No drop of my blood will be yours from now on. I am no longer yours like you are no longer mine.’ And then she left the throne hall. My father ran after her, calling her name like a brokenhearted madman, only to see her lying unconscious on the steps at the Palace entrance. My father called every doctor he could find, desperate to save her. They managed to save me. She died the next day, never regaining consciousness."

My eyes became teary just listening to his story.

"Your mother must have been a brave woman," I said as I gently patted his clenched fist on the table.

His jaw was tense, as I bet recalling this story only increased his hatred towards Elora. Nonetheless, he forced himself to give me a smile in response.

"She loved my father, and he supposedly was in love with her. Unluckily, he was too much of a coward to hurt his own child, even if that child murdered the one he loved. I hated him for that, and I have never forgiven him," he added, then gave me a pugnacious smile. "So… what about your parents?"

I grinned awkwardly at him. I had myself to blame for this. I was the one who had blissfully opened Pandora's box. I inhaled and told him most of my complicated relationships with my father and about the mother I could hardly remember. Then I told Kanan that my father wanted to sell me to the Northern Alpha so I could become his sex slave and a living incubator to bear his super-heir.

"Oh, and did I mention that my father and that Northern Alpha are invited for tomorrow's celebration ball?" I said while laughing hysterically.

"Lilith, relax." He leaned over and put his hands on my shoulders to calm me down. "You are not the same person you used to be. You are stronger now, and I don't mean only in physical strength. You have learned to live by the rule of an eye for an eye, and you are ready to live in this fuck-up world of ours," he grinned.

I smiled wryly at him, trying hard to absorb his words.

"One more thing, Lilith." He locked his eyes on me with a serious expression that suddenly painted his face. "You are no longer an ordinary human whom they could have stepped on. Your father and this Alpha you were sold to are no longer superior. It is about time you start thinking of them as your equal."
