My Most Precious Human novel Chapter 126

I took a deep breath and stepped towards Draven's bookshelves. I reached for one of the paper folders and briefly looked through it, hoping to find any documents signed by Draven. I found nothing. I took out a few more folders and put them on the floor. Then I crouched down and skipped the pages, but they were only printed. In another folder, I finally found his handwritten initials, D.E., but it was far from being any kind of proof. I sighed nervously and put the paper folders back in their place.

It looked like I had to go through the huge pile of documents on Draven's desk. When I got my hands on the page with Draven's full signature, I almost screamed out of happiness. My heart started to pound while I examined each letter he had written with great attention. Even from his written name, I could see that he had beautiful handwriting. His letters were perfectly curved and flawless. The edges were smooth, and each line was solid. There was nothing edgy or aggressive in his writing. Even without being a handwriting expert, judging by the signature alone, I could easily claim that JD's notes were written by somebody else. However, I still needed better proof to rule Draven out as a suspect.

I went through more than half of the documents on his desk, and my frustration rose. I spent at least twenty minutes in Draven's room, and I knew I should get out of there, but I wanted to be able to convince Kanan and myself that Draven wasn't the one we were looking for.

"This is useless," I sighed angrily, putting down another business contract with nothing but the same signature I had already seen before.

Then I thought of looking into the drawers… which, unfortunately, contained a similar number of useless contracts and signed invoices. I become tired and annoyed by looking at them. Just when I was about to give up, I saw a handwritten note stuck in the deepest corner of the drawer. I tried to reach it, but I couldn't. I kneeled, sticking my butt, and stretched my hand as much as I could, but it still wasn't enough.

Suddenly, I heard heavy footsteps on the stairs. The sound was getting louder, and I knew it was Draven going back to the room.

"Shit," I cursed under my breath, knowing that this was my cue to get the hell out of his room.

I clenched my teeth. I knew that I was an inch away from getting my hands on that handwritten note. I gave it another try and this time grabbed it. I pulled it out of the drawer, nearly falling on my butt, but my brief moment of glory hurriedly gave away to fear as I heard Draven walking across the corridor.

I fucked up. It was too late for me to get out of his room before he entered. In a desperate reaction, I decided to hide under his massive desk, naively praying that he wouldn't need to use it. I cringed into a ball, trying to stay soundless and motionless while squeezing his handwritten note in my hand. With the sound of the opening door, I closed my eyes. Draven stepped into the room.

"Idiot! Idiot! Idiot! The scent of your fear is probably all over the place! There's no chance that he wouldn't smell you the first second he enters!" My realization made me panic even more than before.

I put my head on the floor and saw his shoes. I gulped, trying to figure out how I was going to explain breaking into his room. Draven stood still for a few seconds, and my heart stopped, hoping to predict his move. Strangely, he didn't come closer to his desk, which made me slightly relieved and restless at the same time. I heard him sigh, as if he was stretching, then he went towards his door. I heard him turning the upper lock, and then I saw his feet moving closer to his bed.

My breath rate became almost as fast as my heart rate. I think I would rather have him pull me out from under his desk than let me be devoured by anxiety, not knowing what he was about to do. At one moment, I saw him taking off his shoes and putting them away. I tilted my head to see if there was anything aside from his feet and suddenly saw his pants falling to the floor. A second later, his boxer shorts fell to the floor as well. I gasped and quickly covered my mouth so as not to make any sound. As I saw his hand grabbing the clothes from the floor, I was close to having a heart attack, but after a moment of silence, I heard his footsteps heading towards the bathroom. He closed the door behind him.

I couldn't believe my luck! I exhaled, nearly collapsing on the floor, then I cautiously leaned out from under his desk. I sighed, confirming that Draven went to his bathroom, but warily waited until I heard the water coming from the shower and the sound of him closing the cabin door. Then I crawled out, pushed the handwritten note into my pocket, and slowly moved towards the door. My whole body shivered. I couldn't wait until I could get out of there while cursing the whole idea of breaking into Draven's room in my head.

I grabbed the door handle, carefully turned it… and recalled that Draven had locked the damn door! I glanced at the door lock and noticed the key was missing…

"For God's sake, what kind of door needs a key to lock from the inside?!" I went crazy inside my mind.

I swear I wanted to break it just to get the hell out of there… The only problem was that Draven couldn't possibly ignore his broken door. It was already a miracle that he didn't find me hiding under his desk. I looked around nervously. I knew there had to be a key somewhere. I took a deep breath and tried to recall every sound he made at the time he locked the door.

I remembered him taking out the key, and then there was a very short, dull sound. After quickly matching the noise to anything my brain could recognize, I figured Draven must have thrown the key into a fabric pouch or… a pocket.

Why hadn't I thought about it right away? It seemed natural to carry the door key with you. Not so good news for me, unfortunately. I took a glimpse at his bed, and, of course, there were no clothes on it. He must have taken all of them to the bathroom.

A peal of hysteric laughter escaped my throat. I must have been the unluckiest thief on Earth! With every second, my chances of getting out of there unnoticed were dreadfully decreasing. At that moment, I was certain that I would kill Kanan… if I got out of Draven's bedroom alive.

I took a deep breath and glanced at the bathroom door. I knew that my idea couldn't be any worse than going inside there, hoping to search for a key in his clothes, but it seemed to be my only chance. I stepped closer to the bathroom. I could still hear the water coming from the shower. Squirming in anxiety and fear, I turned the handle and glimpsed through the crack in the door.

I aimed to look for Draven's clothes, but my dumb senses directed my gaze straight towards the shower. I gasped and barely restrained myself from screaming. I froze, gaping at Draven's naked muscled back… and naked, perfectly sculptured ass. His black hair graciously waved under the water flow while the multiple drops caressed his skin carefully before happily disappearing in the shower drain. Great. Yet another image that reminded me how horny and insatiable I was. If it wasn't for the need to stay quiet, I would have slapped myself. Fortunately, I forced myself to look away before betraying my presence. I found a pile of Draven's clothes lying right next to the door. I held my breath, reaching out my hand as slowly as possible, trying to feel anything in the shape of the key.

My heart pounded hectically, speeding up my breath rate and turning the whole key search into a precise operation that equaled disarming a bomb. I kept glancing towards the shower, praying that Draven wouldn't turn around… for more than one reason. As I managed to reach into his pants pocket and found a hard, metal object, I almost burst into tears of happiness. I grabbed the key with two fingers and slowly took it out. I was about to withdraw the final inch of my hand from inside the bathroom when I heard the water stop flowing. As the silence came, my muscles lost their tension. The key dropped to the floor.

"Run!" All of my instincts shouted in unison.

In a brainless reaction, I shut the door and dived under Draven's bed as if it would somehow make me invisible. Once my brain defrosted a split second later, my subconscious shot itself a bullet right in the head to avoid looking at the next scene.

Draven walked out of the bathroom. I could see his bare feet wetting the floor. He stopped in front of the bed. I hardly registered him bending down, grabbing my feet, and pulling me out from the bed. Then he lifted me enough to make me stand on my feet right in front of him. The water drops were still tasting his naked skin as he had nothing but his towel wrapped around his waist. His eyes, darker than ever, were pointed at me, piercing me mercilessly. One corner of his lips curved into a lopsided, most frightening smile. He leaned down on me, getting dangerously close to my face.

"Have you enjoyed peeping on me, Lilith?"
