Not Again Mr Whitney novel Chapter 17

The restaurant near the hospital was overpriced by always crowded.

The two of them finally found a seat and sat down. Then Rita kept staring at Calvin.

Calvin was a little uncomfortable, “What? Is there something on my face?”

“I suddenly found you quite strange. I wanna take a closer look and see if you’re still the same old Calvin.”

Calvin smiled, “You’re exaggerating.”

“I’m exaggerating? Ever since you married into the Houston family, you’re always hanging around the kitchen. Since when did you study medicine?”

Before Calvin answered, Rita stopped him, “Stop saying that you’ve read some books. I know what books we have. None of them mentioned the Soul Hook.”

Calvin was thinking fast. Rita was clearly suspicious about him and he had to find a way to muddle through.

“Actually, I signed up for some online classes and I learned everything from there.”

“Online? You really should think twice before you lie.”

Calvin said hastily, “I’m serious. Look.”

He pulled out his phone and found the website that he came across two days ago. There were all kinds of expensive online classes.

Rita tried hard to see the screen, which was completely shattered.

“I told you to change your phone and you wouldn’t listen. So you don’t take my words seriously now?”

Calvin was feeling guilty, “Of course I do. But my mom...”

Rita glared at him. He always used his mother as an excuse.

She threw the phone back to him and grabbed another one from her purse, “It’s my backup phone. You take it.”

Calvin looked at it and found that it was the newest iPhone. And it was brand new.

“This is a backup phone?”

Rita raised her eyebrows, “What? You don’t want it? Then give it back to me.”

“I want it but it’s a little too expensive.”

Calvin was touched. Rita was a kind woman even though she never revealed her feelings. Think about it, she really did a lot for him.

She gave him more than ten dollars so he could afford his mother’s treatments. If it weren’t for her, Shirley would have died a long time ago.

“The treatment you gave to that man might be able to be explained. You’re lucky that you cured him. Or else do you know what kind of trouble you’ll make?”

Calvin was playing with his new phone and he said casually, “No, Miss Bentley is really nice. She is pretty and kind. If she was cold-blooded, she would definitely leave that man there to die.”

He didn’t notice the atmosphere had changed.

“In your view she’s so great?”

Calvin finally realized he made a mistake.

“In my view? Why would I think that? I was just trying be a hero. But you are the only woman that I care for.”

“I don’t buy that.”

Rita sipped some tea and used the teacup to hide her smile.

“Alright. Just eat. After the meal, go back to the Houston’s Clinic with me.”

Calvin was surprised, “The Houston Clinic? We’re not bidding anymore?”

Rita shook her head, “You saw how fierce the competition is. I thought it would be a great deal but now it seemed unworthy. Let’s just give it up.”

“But I don’t want to give it up!”

“What are you saying?”

Rita’s voice sounded grim and she leaned over.

She was wearing some makeup today and looked quite lovely.

She wore a pink suit and a white blouse. Her heaving bosoms was revealed by the V neck which made her neck look elegant and slender.

From Calvin’s angle, he could saw her breasts.

He unconsciously felt quite thirsty and he still couldn’t hold back his feelings after all these years.

“Rita, this is the first job your family has ever given me. I want to do it well.”’

“It depends,” Rita said, “You've seen how many people were there. You think you stand a chance, huh? I saw five clinics there alone. How can you convince Dr. Peters?”

“But if I just give up, mother will...”

“Don't worry about that. I’ll tell her the truth and she won't be unreasonable.”

Calvin didn’t believe that. Nobody knew better about being unreasonable than Carrie.

Then the phone rang.

Rita changed her tone and said to the speaker, “Hi, yes, this is Rita. What? The bidding in the afternoon got canceled? Why? Oh, that’s why...Okay...”

She hung up the phone and looked at Calvin, “You can give up for good now. They had a winner.”

“I thought this was a bidding. Why did they just pick someone?”

“Do you even know who it is? It’s Chelston Healthcare. How are we gonna compete with that?”

Calvin knew about Chelston Healthcare. It was a big enterprise in Chelston. He didn't expect them to be involved in the bid.

Even a big enterprise like them would strive for such little profit.

“Chelston Healthcare has not invested in any Clinic and I'm sure they will look for a partner in the future. We still have a chance.”

Rita didn't expect Calvin to be so stubborn. She was sure Calvin wasn’t worrying that her mother would scold him, but was concerned that he might not be able to get divorced.

“You can do whatever you want. You've got help now. Of course you don't want to have anything to do with the Houston family now...”

Calvin knew she misunderstood. Just as he was trying to explain, a man came up and chipped in.

“I beg your pardon. I cannot stand this anymore. What an honor it is to have lunch with such a beautiful lady! How could you make her mad? You've gone too far.”

Calvin looked up. It was Tommy Marks from the hospital. He was surprisingly annoying.

He was wearing expensive designer’s suits, but even that didn't cover up his bulkiness.

He was also wearing a belt with a huge logo on it, which was purely cheesy and corny.

“Do I even know you? Stop acting like we know each other!” Rita was not in a good mood.

“Sexy, fate brought us together. I just overheard everything. He doesn’t know how to cherish you. But someone else can. Why don’t you join us and enjoy this fine lobster that I just ordered...”

Calvin was having a set meal and Tommy thought he certainly was broke.

“I’m gonna say this one more time. I don’t know you so please leave us alone.”

The guy who was with Tommy was irritated and said, “Why are you acting so cocky? You’re nothing but a pretty face. Mr. Marks has all kinds of side chicks. Don’t act like you’re so innocent. What can that slum dog possibly give you? You came here to order some set meals? Stop playing romance when you’re broke.”

Calvin sped up his pace and ate even faster. He didn’t want to waste his time on some random guys.

Seeing that, Rita was disappointed. What kind of man he was?

Someone harassed his wife and he still took his time eating?

Rita was about to lose her temper. She even wanted to join them just to see if he could tolerate that.

But she couldn’t do such things. She just glared at Tommy and said, “If you keep harassing me, I will call the police.”

Tommy sneered, “I’m just trying to buy you a drink. Will the police care about things like that? Then all the police forces would just keep watching the night clubs and do nothing else. Sweetheart, why are you giving me a hard time? Why can we just be friends?”

Then he contemptuously looked at Calvin, who was still eating.

He had been standing there for a few minutes and Calvin didn’t say anything.

This made Tommy got even bolder.

“Hey, you. Is the set meal yummy?”

Calvin nodded, “It’s good.”

“Hahaha, some five-dollar set mean feels like a feast to you, huh? I’m kind of impressed. Since you like this so much, I’ll offer you a chance to eat whatever you want.”

Tommy pulled out a credit card and said, “Here is ten grand. Now you can afford these kind of set meals for years. I’m into your wife. Take the money and piss off.”

Tommy’s friend clapped and burst out laughing, “Sweetheart, now you see how rich Mr. Marks is. Ten grand is nothing to him. If you become his girlfriend, you’ll have all the money you need for the rest of your life.”

Calvin wiped his mouth and looked at the card on the table.

“Just ten grand? My wife is so pretty. She’s worth much more than that. You think I don’t have that kind of money? You think she’s only worth ten grand?”

Hearing that, Tommy taunted, “Wow, I don’t know a broke dude like you would know how to brag. Then do you have this?”

He tossed his car key onto the table. It was an Aventador, Calvin’s favorite.

“You are nothing compared with me!”
