Take Me Away novel Chapter 146

The ringing of Spencer's phone broke the silence in the empty corridor.

Surprised, he immediately left the ward and sadly pressed the key to answer. "Hello?"

"How are you, Spencer?"

The voice from the other end of the line sounded anxious. It was Terence, who hadn't heard from his friend in a long time.

"I'm fine." Spencer didn't get a wink of sleep last night and his head was a mess.

"Judging from your tone, it doesn't sound like you're alright." Terence sighed. "I understand. A lot of things have happened recently. That's why it took me a while to call."

"Yes, a lot of things have happened indeed." Spencer stood in front of the window and watched as the sun rose, spilling light onto the dark sky.

"Is Fiona's child..." Terence hesitated for a bit before mustering the courage to ask, "Are you really not the baby's father?"

There was hardly any change on Spencer's face when he answered, "I don't know."

Not knowing how to reply, Terence said nothing. He knew what kind of person Spencer was. He didn't handle things well when he thought he had little control over them. When he said "I don't know," it told Terence that Spencer felt utterly helpless about the situation.

"What about Celine?" There was a trace of anger in Terence's tone when he changed the subject. "What happened between you and her? Tell me! Are you still in love with her? Do you want to continue pursuing Celine? Do you want to be with her even if you're already with Fiona?"

"I don't know!" Spencer raised his voice in anger. "I was drunk when that happened. When I woke up, I could barely remember a thing! Damn it! I don't want to think about that now! Stop talking about it!"

"What a ridiculous excuse! If you were drunk, you could've gone to bed and slept. You didn't have to do anything to Celine. Cut the crap, Spencer! You're the one who always boasts of having a strong will. And you're telling me now that all that's changed just because of a bit of wine? Bullshit! You should be ashamed! I just want to know how you're going to solve this mess!"

Spencer was speechless. He could only scratch his head before stammering, "I didn't know what happened when I woke up. I really couldn't remember."

After admitting that to Terence, a question remained in his head. He didn't understand how he could've lost self-control just because he had a drink. It wasn't a matter of pride, he was never the type to act recklessly even when inebriated. How could it have turned out like this?

"Tell Celine to go away. She can't stay with you anymore," Terence said. "Did you even stop to consider that you've gotten the Cheng family in a potential scandal?"

"Of course, I know that," Spencer said dryly. He had already made his mind that he was going to tell Celine to leave. It seemed as if Wayne's decision was right all along. "How are things over there at M City?" Spencer asked, desperate to change the topic.

"Nothing much has changed here. When I'm not too busy, I visit your grandpa to play chess with him. He's been missing you and Fiona. He keeps on asking if you'd come back in time for the New Year. Are you coming back for the holiday?"

"It's so hot here in P City, I can't even feel that New Year is coming!" Spencer replied. "I'll try to get us back there before the holiday."

"That's good."

"How's Wen Group doing?"

"Ryan's handling everything. The company's almost bankrupt. Charles transferred a lot of money overseas. Internally, some of its best designers have started leaving one after another. It's all quite a shock! No one knows how long it will take for the company to recover."

'Designers?' Spencer suddenly thought of Fiona. She also wanted to become a designer. He wanted to see how she would feel if she became a designer. But before that...

"Okay. I have nothing else to say to you. I have other things I need to attend to." Spencer was about to end the call when Terence interrupted him.

"Wait! I have one last question. What are your plans? Listen to me, your father might call you soon. If the prosecutors take Fiona away, things will get hard. You know how difficult they can get. Once they've got you, they won't let you get away so easily."

Spencer frowned as he thought of the worst that could happen. Since Fiona, the wife of a major general, had been abducted by Charles, the prosecutors would be inviting her for some questions. He knew that the prosecutors were very strict and they wouldn't just let her go without a thorough investigation.

"Do you think they'd also ask to talk to Celine?" Terence asked.

"I don't know. Anyway, I'll handle this on my own." Spencer pressed his lips as he saw Fiona step out of the ward. He quickly said goodbye to Terence. "I need to hang up now!" The line went dead before Terence could even respond.

As soon as Fiona stepped out of the ward, several nurses passing by exchanged glances and whispered to one another.

She turned to a different direction to avoid them, but her path was blocked by Spencer. With the sun at his back, his huge figure cast a shadow over her face.

They froze where they stood, not budging to move towards each other, but not moving away either. Suddenly, their relationship felt cold and distant.

"Mr. Cheng, Miss Cheng has woken up!"

Just then, a nurse hurried over and talked to Spencer.

"Got it," he replied without taking his eyes off his wife.

Her lips were still pale and she looked a bit dispirited. Upon hearing the nurse's news, Fiona withdrew her eyes, seeming to be at a loss. She leaned against the wall as she staggered to leave.

But Spencer followed her as she moved.

"Why are you following me?" Fiona stood still, but kept her head lowered.

"Come with me to see Celine."

Fiona shivered. She instantly shook her head and said, "I don't want to."

"It's not up to you to decide!" Before she could say anything else, Spencer had grabbed her arm and dragged her on the way to Celine's ward.

"Let me go, Spencer!" She struggled to break free while protecting her belly. "Let go of me!"

Spencer realized what she was doing when he turned to look at her. He gave a bitter smile and walked faster.

It wasn't long until they reached Celine's ward. With a loud thud, Spencer kicked the door open before ordering the doctor to leave. "Get out!"

The doctor and the nurse attending to Celine exchanged glances before leaving the room quietly.

Spencer was still holding Fiona's wrist tightly when they entered. He didn't let her go, even though she had long stopped resisting him. In his head, Spencer thought that if he let go, he would no longer have an excuse to hold her hand.

"Spencer..." Celine called out to him as she sobbed. She was sitting on her bed and looked as if she was about to cry. No longer was she the proud and arrogant woman she used to be. Instead, she looked completely weak and helpless.

"I'm here." Spencer finally let go of Fiona and walked up to Celine's bed. He held her in his harms and said, "It's all my fault."

Hearing his comforting words, tears ran down Celine's eyes. "Our baby..." she cried. "The baby's gone! I was pregnant. But before I could even feel it, it's gone..."

Feeling like an outsider, Fiona only looked at them silently. As much as she wanted to sympathize with Celine, she couldn't feel sorry for her in her heart. She had once lost a child, too. But back then, it was Spencer's decision to have it aborted. And this time around, he suspected that her child wasn't his and still didn't want to keep it.

'Maybe he still has feelings for Celine. He probably took me here to humiliate me,' she thought.

"Fiona! It's you!" Celine cried and screamed as she pointed a shaking finger at her. "It's you! You killed my baby! You will pay for this! I will make you pay for killing my child!" Celine's body trembled as she wailed. Had Spencer not stopped her, she would have rushed to hurt Fiona.

"I'm sorry." Frowning, Fiona apologized in a low voice. "This happened to you because of me. I'm sorry."

"I don't need your insincere apology! You killed my baby! You will pay for this, Fiona!" Celine roared with reddened eyes.

"But even if the accident didn't happen, you still would not have been able to keep your baby," Fiona declared as she clenched her fists. As soon as she finished her words, Spencer and Celine both turned to her in shock.

"It's true, isn't it?" Fiona continued. "Grandpa and Dad would not have let you keep the child, unless you two are no longer siblings, right?"

"Fiona! You vicious woman!" Celine screamed.

"Fiona, did you intentionally push Celine?" Spencer let go of Celine and walked up to her.

"Spencer..." Celine called Spencer but he raised a hand, gesturing for her to stay put.

Hearing Spencer's question, Fiona's heart sank but she didn't want to explain herself. She knew that when people didn't believe her, no explanation would suffice. They wouldn't believe her even if she said that it was all an accident.

The ward was quiet except for Celine's sobbing. Standing in front of Fiona, Spencer glared at her and said, "You were right. But since it was you who pushed her, you should take responsibility for her miscarriage."

"What do you want?"

"I'm giving you two options." Noticing that Fiona wasn't denying his accusations, Spencer slowly continued, "First, a life for a life. You must abort your child..."

"No way!" Before he could finish his words, Fiona raised her head and looked at him defiantly. She was like a lioness protecting her cub. "I will not hurt my baby! If you want to kill it, you will have to kill us both!"

Spencer flashed a mocking smile but his heart was flooded with bitterness. He had already known that Fiona wouldn't agree to his proposal, but he asked nevertheless. The answer came as no surprise, but it still broke his heart.

"You have another choice." Spencer swallowed as soon as the words came out of his mouth.

"What?"

"Divorce. Take your child and get out my life."
