The CEO Gets What He Wants novel Chapter 188

Feeling scared, the housekeeper quickly called Cayden on the phone.

With trembling hands, she dialed the number, but no one answered the phone. She dialed a second time, but no one answered, either.

Each time, however, the phone had rung on the other end.

Finally, when the housekeeper lost count of the number of times she called, someone answered the phone.

“Mr. Cayden, Old Mr. Moore has fainted in the yard from a heart attack! Please come back and have a look!”

In the hospital, Jeffrey was lying on the hospital bed. After being rescued, he had already woken up, and his vital signs had finally returned to normal.

Allie sat on a chair beside the hospital bed, blaming herself and wiping her tears.

When Lily and Kendrick heard about it, they rushed over as soon as possible.

Kendrick was Bruce's second son, and he had a deep affection for his grandfather. After his father passed away, he had grown up living under the same roof as his grandfather.

Jeffrey was strict, but that was because he was a responsible grandfather tasked with the proper upbringing of his grandchildren.

His affection for his grandfather was even deeper than his feelings for his father, who died of illness when he was still a young child.

There was something else that was precious and memorable, which was the reason why Kendrick felt grateful to his grandfather.

Back then, when his father had wanted to abandon his mother and marry Allie, his social-climbing mistress, it was Jeffrey who had adamantly disagreed and threatened to take his own life. Thus, the mother and son were able to continue living in the Moore residence.

Kendrick remembered that while his parents were arguing over their divorce, the once glorious Berry family was going through a terrible downfall.

If not for Jeffrey, Kendrick and Lily would have been ruthlessly driven out of the house and Allie would have taken over their home. They would be homeless, living on the streets, and looked down upon by society.

Kendrick's gratitude to his grandfather had always been hidden in his heart, concealed by a rebellious facade. He wanted to repay his grandfather, but he really had no talent when it came to business.

Kendrick's eldest brother, on the other hand, was born with the perfect genes to be the heir to the Moore family business.

However, his brother's biological mother was disgusting.

Kendrick frowned as he gazed at Jeffrey, who was panting weakly and lying there on the hospital bed. In his grateful heart, an old man like his grandfather deserved to live a long life without suffering from sickness and pain.

Lily looked at Allie, who was still crying. She felt that things could not be taken at face value, so she asked, “When I went out in the morning, Dad was fine! Why did he suddenly suffer a heart attack?”

Lily was certain that she understood Allie's character through and through. The shameless woman was not the type who would cry because her father-in-law had a heart attack.

There was more to this than meets the eye.

The high-class ward was very spacious, with a bed and a row of cabinets on one side. The other side was furnished like a living room with couches and a coffee table.

Cayden had been silent from the time he arrived at the hospital.

Jeffrey was first pushed into the emergency room and then the long rescue process began. When it ended, the lights in the operating room changed, and finally, the old man was pushed out. Throughout all that, Cayden did not utter a word.

Everyone waited quietly until the old man woke up, and they watched the doctor announce that all his bodily functions had returned to normal.

In the quiet ward, no one answered Lily's question. At the head of the bed, the nurse in charge lowered her head and carefully massaged the hands of the old man so that the backs of the old hands fitted with intravenous needles could be more comfortable.

Right then, Cayden's steady and orderly footsteps were heard in the ward.

It was long past the agreed time to leave for Livingsfill, but Avery's phone was unreachable. Cayden could not help but worry.

In the morning, Allie's words about her had been too scathing.

Lying on the hospital bed, Jeffrey moved as he could recognize the footsteps even with his eyes closed. He called out weakly, “Cayden... Stop... Don't leave...”

Lily gazed at Jeffrey.

Kendrick turned to look at Cayden, who was headed toward the door.

This simple cry from Jeffrey made something quite clear.

Cayden was the reason behind Jeffrey's heart attack and fainting spell.

As Cayden had always been sensible and filial, Lily was puzzled by how he could have upset Jeffrey this time.

Allie took the tissue offered to her by a nurse and dabbed her eyes, which were red from crying. Then she lifted her head and said, “All of you, please go out.”

Immediately, Kendrick got up to go out as he understood that his grandfather, elder brother, and Allie needed to talk.

Lily did not want to leave as she wanted to know what had happened, but Kendrick led her out forcibly.

The nurse was also asked to leave.

In the end, there were only Jeffrey, on the hospital bed, Allie, eyes all red and swollen at his bedside, and Cayden, who was standing motionless at the door.

With her head lowered, Allie sat on the chair and wiped her eyes with a tissue. “Cayden, I know you hate me for telling your grandpa about this, but you have to understand that other than this, I can't do anything. You can't risk losing so much because of one woman!”

Taking advantage of Jeffrey's frailty, Allie rushed to finish her speech before he could say anything.

“Back then, when I was alone with you, life was so hard. When I was struggling, my parents disowned me, and my former friends didn't help me. I was on my own. The most gratifying thing was that I still had you. But reality dealt me another blow again. In order to protect you, I had to accept the help of a man like Leonardo.”

This recitation was for the benefit of Jeffrey and Cayden.

Bruce had passed away, so she no longer needed to fear her violent and ruthless late husband. Nevertheless, the backbone of the Moore family, Jeffrey, was still alive.

What had happened today was irreversible. Since her son was not on her side, as a mother, there was nothing she could do but enlist her father-in-law's help and ask him to see to justice.

Jeffrey's health was frail, and he was easily worked up, but she had no choice. In desperation, she had got him to resolve the matter and in doing so, she had put his life at risk.

Avery must be stopped from marrying into the Moore family, whatever the cost.

“As far as I know, before the Moore family brought me back, I grew up in an orphanage!” Cayden's calm, icy voice filled the ward.

He had never complained about his past.

Even though he sympathized with Lily and knew how unsavory his own mother was, Allie was his biological mother and he had to support and respect her.

However, the truth was that his mother's deeds in her youth had made it impossible for him to feel close to her.

He respected her from afar and took care of her needs, but he had never opened his heart to her and they rarely communicated.

From the time he lived in the orphanage and then later returned to the Moore residence, he gradually became sensible and understood the unethical actions the adults had taken. He listened to their quarrels from time to time and the scandalous incidents destroyed his innocence, forcing his mind to distinguish right from wrong.

His mother was a schemer and an unwed mistress who had used despicable means to attain wealth. This was the plain truth that could not be whitewashed.
