Wooing The Ex-Wife novel Chapter 35

Jonathan stood there like a block of ice, unmoving and frozen. He couldn't make sense of what was happening, one moment Liza was standing across him and the next she was kissing him. He hesitantly moved his lips against her. Liza's taste filling his senses. It had been so long since he had kissed Liza. He realized that what he remembered of kissing Liza was only a faded memory and the actual kiss felt so much more. He was getting into the kiss when suddenly Liza pulled away, a blush coating her cheeks.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to do that." Liza said backing away a bit, she was slightly out of breath and her voice was a raspy. Jonathan's heart shattered at her words and the light on his face dimmed. Liza's eyes widened as she took in his crest fallen expression. "No... No...No, don't get me wrong. I didn't regret the kiss. I just meant that I didn't want to attack you." Liza said in a rush. Her blush deepening as she said the last few words. She was still wedged between the table and Jonathan.

Jonathan was still dazed from the kiss. It was unexpected to say the least. He had been prepared to say goodbye, maybe a sad look from Liza but he hadn't imagined that she would kiss him. "What does this mean?" he asked her, not daring to get his hopes up. He wasn't ready for Liza to say that it was a goodbye of sorts not after the kiss they had just shared. The moment they had shared seemed like a key to everything, they could open a new door with it or seal themselves away from each other forever. Liza's mind was hay wired. She could feel alarms buzzing in her mind. She knew she wasn't ready to fall back into the way they had been before, she had changed and was no longer clinging to Jonathan like he was her life boat. She searched for the right answer, for the words which would say exactly what she wanted to convey but she came up with nothing.

Jonathan watched as Liza's eyes flitted trying to answer him. He let out a breath. He shouldn't be impatient, he should have given her all the time but now when he could see a thin glimmer of hope, he was finding it difficult to wait. She needs time, he thought. He remembered when he had first confessed, it had been difficult to do it but he wasn't expecting a confession here. It was much greater than confessing your love for someone, Liza was deciding whether to put her trust in him again or not, whether to take a risk of getting hurt again or to let him go for good. When you are confessing your love, you relive your own heart of that subdued pain and heaviness, you place your heart out open and you become vulnerable, however if the person denies your love, you can move on and you can rest knowing that you have done your part however when you decide to trust someone who has broken you once in the worst way possible, it isn't what your heart is at stake, getting your trust broken again by the same person puts your essence of life at stake. It can shake up and destroy the foundations your life was built on, it can warp your mind to never trust anybody again. Jonathan understood the gravity of the question he had just asked, but he needed to know.

Liza looked at Jonathan, his eyes were staring into hers. She wile herself to speak but it was becoming difficult with each passing second, she was sure that by now it had already been hours since they had been standing in the same position . However, one look at the round clock behind Jonathan would have cleared away the notion as it showed the two minutes which had ticked by. "I want to be with you" Liza blurted out. It wasn't as elegantly put as she would have liked, nor it was as detailed and as complex as she felt, it was simple and yet somehow whole. The sentence contained the words which mattered, which made it possible for them to overcome anything thrown their way.

She was no longer the simple minded girl she had been and Jonathan was no longer the person who had taken things for granted. These past years had taught them a lot and yet as they stood there, neither of them felt that anything else could ever matter to what they were feeling in the moment. Everything else simply became irrelevant. However it was life and not a fairy tale and the magic that had been woven around them was broken with her next words. "But it won't be the same" Liza said and as the magic around Jonathan shattered, he saw the reality and he realized that it would be tougher than he had imagined. They would have to adjust themselves to each other's new found traits and they will have to work from the basics, they will have to build up their castle again but still everything was alright.

"I know" Jonathan said. His voice was wavering and yet instead of the shaky voice being a sign of his doubt, Liza felt assured. Liza could see his doubts ad they matched with hers. It showed that he was just as afraid as she was and it was reassuring. She wasn't the only one who would have to work, who had her soul on stake, Jonathan was there with her on every step and with everything in him. He would no longer hold back her fears, her doubts, her anger or her love. She would give it all and she knew that so would Jonathan.

"We will take it slow" he said. Jonathan knew that it wasn't the fairy tale of sleeping beauty where one kiss cold restore everything back, no it was life and their relationship will never be the way it once was. "We won't ever be the same, will we?" he asked Liza who had managed to remove herself from between Jonathan and table and was now standing before him with her back to the door. Jonathan was still holding her by her waist, he needed some contact to make sure that he wasn't dreaming, also if this indeed was a dream he didn't want to disturb it by letting her go. "No" she said "we will be better. We have earned from our past and now we can be better." She said.

Jonathan smiled at her words and was about to lean down and kiss her again when his phone began blaring with his alarm tune "There goes my flight" he said. "You won't be needing it today" Liza whispered and reached up to kiss him once more and as they moved together, they knew that even though they had irreversibly changed they would make it together because as love leads one to think that they were invincible when they were together.
